Today I am… Thankful

It’s easy to get caught up in the hum drum of life. The monotony. The each-of-these-days-is-just-like-the-other mentality. It’s so easy to become complacent. To forget. To lose sight of all of the amazing-ness that is around us. Always.

Yeah, OK, things aren’t awesome all the time. Sometimes things are shitty. And life can really suck. But it’s also bloody brilliant isn’t it? Every day no matter how rough, there is something to be thankful for. Something to be grateful for. Something to laugh and smile and someone to love.

So today, this Tuesday, I am thankful.

I am thankful for so much beauty in my life. I am thankful for opportunities given to me by companies to represent them, to write for them. I am thankful that I get to earn a small living from doing what I love. I am thankful that I have the facility for education and the drive to change my own life. I am thankful for the food in our fridge and the clothes on our back, even if they aren’t exactly what I want to eat or what I wish I was wearing. I am thankful.

It’s so easy to lose perspective. To lose sight of just how lucky we are. Those of us born into privilege. Whether it be the privilege of family love, or money, or economic safety… or for most of us the privilege of being born in a country where we have had access to good healthcare and financial support in our darkest hour and access to great education. We are so lucky. Our children are so lucky. We all could have easily been born somewhere else, with less opportunity, with less chance. When I read people complain about the menial, the unimportant, when I see people take their privilege for granted, it breaks my heart… it’s so easy to be greedy, it’s so easy to forget just how lucky we are… but it’s also really easy to put our hand out to someone less fortunate, and say, I am here with you, we are no different, you and I.

So I am thankful for the privillege of my birth. And tea. Hot cups of tea. And fast internet. And quiet libraries and stolen study hours where I get to read articles written by incredible people doing phenomenal things to change the world. Stolen minutes where I get to write and compose essays about things that truly matter to me. Where I get the privilege to study social change and to fight for the things that I believe in. I am thankful for that. When it becomes overwhelming and difficult and it challenges me and I want to give up (and it does, and often I do), I am reminded just how lucky I am to have the facility to do the things that I do. Perspective is a powerful thing, it’s something we should all be very wary of losing sight of.

I am thankful for fresh green grass and cool nights and the sleeping baby breath on my face as I sleep. I am thankful for a hot shower and crisp clean sheets. I am thankful for this beautiful online community that is growing and for you, those who comment and those who are the silent observers… for your love and your support and your wisdom.

I am thankful for sunday morning sausage sizzles and a beautiful friend to walk with to the park. Someone to share my secrets with while we watch our little people jump in puddles and throw dirt. Is there anything more valuable than friends?

I am thankful for my daughter. So thankful for her. Her wicked sense of humour and her contagious laugh and her unbelievable ability to love with every ounce of herself. I am thankful for her bringing so much light into my every day. I am in total awe of her, inspired by her endless imagination and her unstoppable future.

I am thankful for little tiny hair-clips and first-time piggy tails and baby kisses.

What are you thankful for?

Heather - After several days of a stomach virus running rampant through our house of which all 3 kids have had, and a husband who is only home 1 day a week, I’m exhausted. But I’m still thankful. Thankful that I have these 3 gorgeous babies to take care of, even when it’s terribly difficult. Thankful that though my husband is not around much, he has a good job that affords for me to stay home and raise my babies myself. Thankful for life and love and great friends and family. There was a bombing yesterday at the Boston marathon, and a beautiful little 8 year old boy was one of the victims. I’m so thankful that that wasn’t my child. Thankful that I could go to bed last night and hug my babies, even if it meant I was covered in vomit. Thankful to be alive. Thankful for you Sash, for reminding me how good I have it.ReplyCancel
