Do you ever have the feeling that you’re constantly chasing your tail? That’s me right now. I’m so full of ideas and inspiration. I have so many plans and a to-do list that is growing by the minute. But every day I feel like I’m constantly playing catch up, just trying to stay on top of the dishes and the washing and the blog and the work and… and… and… breathe. Balance is something I’m really lacking these days and with the final semester of my Masters about to start and a huge overseas trip only two months away it is something that I’m desperately searching for.

How do you find balance in your every day? How do you juggle what you love and who you love with your responsibilities and your work and your every day? Do you have a secret? 2PIN IT 3PIN IT 4PIN IT 5PIN IT 6PIN IT 7PIN IT 8PIN IT 9PIN IT

There has been some interesting and wonderful and terribly disappointing stories in the news this week. I’m shocked at the Australian approach to asylum seekers. Anyone who has read this blog ever before would know that I’m very against turning people away. People seeking safety, people seeking better lives for themselves and their families. This great land doesn’t belong to any of us. It is not mine and it is not yours. My neighbour knocked on my door last week, she is a kind dear old lady and the head of our local neighbourhood watch. She is all of the busybody and nosy that one would expect. She’s lovely and I’ll bet you she makes a mean batch of scones. Unfortunately she also comes along with the old (and new) school of racial prejudice and judgement. I had to stop her talking last week as I was finding her language and her opinions very offensive. I didn’t want my daughter to hear people called such derogatory names due to their racial background or religion. I don’t want my daughter exposed to that kind of judgement.

It’s an old school of thought that has become new again, much like vintage linen and pickling vegetables. Why can’t we open our doors and our arms and our hearts and fight for our fellow humans who deserve love and safety and joy just as much as we do. Why is it so damn hard to just give a shit about other people? Are we really that scared of what is “other”?

Looking for a bit of weekend inspiration? I’ve been loving Upworthy recently, it’s a great place to go to see some pretty inspiring, powerful, political and social commentary by kids, comedians and social activists. I love it! Here are a few that really spoke to me this week that I think you would love: these kids have an opinion on racism, one girl fights back against child marriage, powerful young activist who fights for justice – these people, each and every one of them, in their youth and their passion and their truth and their fire is INSPIRING to me. Absolutely inspiring. We do not have to see each other as “other” whether it be because we are male or female or black or white or rich or poor. We can just be one. Together.

Can’t we?

I’ve got to believe that we can, so that I can fight for it. For me. For you. For her.

Will you?

Lilybett - Did you crack the concrete with your wood chopping? I’ve managed to do that a time or two.

No secrets over here – my teaching semester is about to begin and the thought of all the marking to come is leaving me feeling a little paralyzed. I have lectures to write and papers to finish – but by 2 or 3 o’clock my mind is wandering and I ‘m checking out ABC iview or SBS on demand to see what documentaries I can watch. If you find an answer, let me know. xxReplyCancel

Maxabella - Sometimes I think that our society got too big for a life. We know too much about what our potential is and what’s available out there and… still there are only 24 hours in a day. I would have thought the hours would grow along with our ambition. xReplyCancel

Lila - Just keep swimming, is the best advice I can offer on fitting it all in.
As for the otherness, it’s never made sense to me this selfishness and nasty way we treat perceived differences. I just make sure my children are raised to believe in caring for their fellow human and I very proudly have watched my eldest become someone who doesn’t tolerate the stupidity of racism, homophobia and other fear based judgements. I just hope there are many more parents teaching their children the same and that somehow things will change.ReplyCancel

Peggy - I feel exactly the same – head non-stop full of ideas and inspiration and not near enough time to indulge in them. I thought when I stopped working full time I’d be able to humour those thoughts and ideas more, getting there but still finding it hard to manage my time. I think the more time I do have, the more ideas I also have!ReplyCancel
