Good Food: The (not so) Green Smoothie Diaries III

Smoothies and eggs are our morning routine. Simple, easy and chock full of nutrients to give us both a good start for the day. As most busy mama’s know making 53 different meals in the morning is a giant pain in the butt. So I make the same thing for both Bo and I every day. The one thing I mix up, is the smoothie.

I’ve shared a few of our favourites in the past, but this particular little beauty is getting a real workout at the moment… it’s just that little bit decadent with a little chocolatey twist and is paired nicely with a morning walk and a good episode of one of my favourite podcasts with Bo strapped into the stroller. It’s full of good things for your body and even better, it tastes amazing.

Get it in ya.

The Raspberry Super Smoothie.

1 big cup of fresh or frozen raspberries (I use locally farmed and frozen from my farmers market)
1 tablespoon of raw Maca/Cacao blend powder.
1 banana
1 tablespoon of chia seeds
Fresh milk (whatever floats your boat)
1 cup of Kefir (or yoghurt)

Blend until smooth, keep adding milk until it’s the right consistency for you. Share with your favourite little (or big!) person for an excellent start to the day.

Do you use Maca root powder? I bought the blend by accident (I was going for raw cacao) in the health food shop a few weeks ago, and I’m still not sure what to think…

Lilybett - I can’t find raw cacao anywhere in my seriously surburban shops. I don’t have any chance of finding Maca root powder as well. Even by accident. Might have to plan a trip into the city.ReplyCancel

Bella Mills @ Sea and Salt - HI Lilybett! I purchased ours from Go Vita, they sell maca root powder by itself or in cacao powder blends. if you’re planning to blend maca/cacao anyway, then purchase the blend because it’s more economical

endelaney - I haven’t tried the Maca/Cacao blend but I use Maca and Lucuma in smoothies or over yogurt or hot cereal. This sounds delicious! Love those sweet little hands…ReplyCancel

Sash - Do you notice a difference after using Maca? Do you think it’s really as great as it’s marketed to be? I’m confused by all the sales pitches… sometimes it’s hard to sift through all of the “stuff” and find the actual truth… you know? I’d love to know your opinion!ReplyCancel

endelaney - Ahhh, I totally hear you. I am sucker for all the marketing, so I have to be really careful:) I want to try everything! I have found that if I use it randomly, I hardly notice, it is more mental. If I use it daily, I really do feel good. However, above supplements, superfoods, etc, I feel the one thing that REALLY changes my mood and energy is juicing. I can’t get enough. I think I would drink vegetable juice 2 x a day, every day if I could! Anyway, that might not help, but those are my thoughts:)ReplyCancel

endelaney - I really think you will love it! While I have a dream juicer that I hope to purchase one day, we have been using one that was given to us and it is around $60 new.
It works great and it is a good starter. Here is a recent recipe we’ve enjoyed…
Carrot, Apple, Beet and Ginger is also another favorite. At the end of the week, I juice whatever veggies I didn’t use in cooking and add, lemon and ginger. With those two ingredients any random combination of vegetables somehow taste pretty good together, at least in my opinion:)

Bella Mills @ Sea and Salt - Sash, you’ve inspired me! I made a different version of this (based solely on what I had at home… i’m not going to the shops as I have uni assignments due this week). I used frozen raspberries. fresh bananas, 2 tsp cacao poser, 1 tsp maca root powder, almond milk and fresh mint from my garden. It sounds weird with the mint but it was incredible, like a black forest cake with gorgeous berry flavours mixed in with velvety chocolate. YUM!
    Your smoothies rock!
P.S. If you ever consider a trip to the east coast, you’re very welcome to pop in to our place for a seaside holiday.

    Marie - Hello!

I discovered your blog about 2 weeks ago, and in that time, I have quickly devoured every entry from the beginning. I find you absolutely inspiring; your story is so similar to my sister’s. I recommended your blog to her as I think she will find a lot of strength and hope in it, for both her and her little girl.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself, I think you’re wonderful. I’m currently in my 7th month of pregnancy and your writing has led me to rethink a lot of parenting ideas. So expect to see me around ๐Ÿ˜€ReplyCancel
