After my last green smoothie post, an Inked reader mentioned that I could make green smoothies without milk at all. It hadn’t even occured to me. I guess I thought, smoothies equals milk… right? I guess not necessarily. I’ve had an abundance of fresh herbs recently. Bo and I have just started designing and planting our own herb garden (thank goodness, I’m SO sick of buying herbs of varying qualities) but while it is becoming established I have been purchasing herbs from local growers at farmers markets. I always buy too much. I have a bit of a love affair for fresh smelling herbs and I always go a little overboard. I try to dry out the extra or chop and seal and pop in the freezer for later use. I started wondering if I could use my favourite herbs in smoothies, I know they are packed full of great nutrients and I love the fresh leafy taste of mint and coriander. Coriander being a particular favourite of mine.

So I did a hunt around the internet and I found this recipe. It’s wonderful and fresh and earthy and super healthy. This one isn’t one of my own it’s the creation of the ladies at Simple Green Smoothies (which is a wonderful resource if you haven’t discovered it yet), I change around the amounts a bit to suit my personal taste. It’s a great recipe and it’s far too good to keep secret.

The Fresh and Clean Green Smoothie

 

1.5 cups of baby spinach (or just a few big handfulls)
1 cup of fresh coriander (leaves, stalks and all)
2 – 3 ripe bananas (I store them in my fridge or freezer so they make the smoothie nice and cold)
1 lime (without peel) cut into chunks
1 knob of peeled ginger, chopped.
2 cups of cold water

 

Blend together until smooth. Enjoy cold!

 

Tip: If you are buying (instead of growing) coriander always choose herbs that are really fragrant and never discard the roots. Chop them up and store them in a airtight container or bag in your fridge or freezer. They are essential for a good thai curry!

Need a pick me up? This one is excellent and I’d hazard a guessย  that it would be an excellent hangover remedy… not that I ever need those any more… but back in the day, I think this would have served me well.

This smoothie has a bit of a bite to it with the ginger, Bo is a big fan of strong flavours but your little one might prefer you to omit it… Take the time to adjust this to suit your taste, it’s a real winner.

    I always put milk in smoothies too…for some reason I tend to put almond milk in green smoothies?
    Sadly our chooks have eaten my herb garden…and they get the roots of any herbs I buy too.

      Sash - Hey Sarah, I just use my blender. I don’t have a specific juicer as I find a good blender does it all. I’m big on eating the whole fruit or vegetable… so I don’t really have any use for a juicer ๐Ÿ™‚ xx You should try this! Maybe you could even convince Stan to give it a go too!ReplyCancel

    Stumbled onto your site which I already LOVE. Today tried my first green smoothie (this one) and it was really wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing with us. Baked eggs will be next on the agenda. I really like the way you handle food and your thinking. I’m trying to make some small but meaningful adjustments so I appreciate finding likeminded places to give sensible things a try!
    In terms of the blender vs juicer thing, this was the first “juice” I’ve made successfully in the thermomix. Others have been a disaster and really gross. The water makes it work.
