I love smoothies, not only because I love to drink them but because my kid downs them as if they are the best treat I have ever given her.
With winter upon us and lots of colds and flues circling around I know how important it is to get a good dose of vitamins into both of us to keep us strong and keep the sniffles at bay. Both Kiwifruit and Kale are in season (buy local!) and are packed with more vitamin C than you will find in an orange, along with lots of other awesome vitamins that are good for your body and your mind… I can pick up these ingredients cheap at my farmers market so I thought, why not combine them and see if we can come up with a delicious winter smoothie combo, and we did! yummm…
The Immunity Booster Green Smoothie.
2 large stalks of Kale (discard the tough stalk and just use the leaves)
2 kiwi fruit
1 Banana
1 Mango cheek (I freeze mine when they are in season and cheap, you can omit this if you want, just add another banana)
2 cups of milk (cows, kefir, nut milk, whatever takes your fancy, water would work too)
1 little squeeze of lemon juice.
Blend until smooth. Yum!
Tip: When you buy your kale, remove all the leaves from the bunch and bag in a ziplock bag in the freezer, kale breaks down more easily in the blender after it’s been frozen and keeps your smoothie nice and cold. It also ensures there is no wastage.
As always this smoothie was kid-tested and got the toddler approval.
Enjoy!
ecky1808 - I’m going to make this tomorrow, I just made apple, banana, kiwi fruit and mint fruit yum yum
Alisha - My daughter, Gigi (2years) and I have green smoothies every morning for breakfast. She loves them and they are a great way to get spinach/kale/lettuce into her. We don’t mix with milk, we just use water. We eat whatever fruits are in the fridge- pawpaw/pineapple/strawberries/banana. Whatever is available.
Sash - I’ve been seriously considering doing this sans milk. I had some great whole veg juices at a local farmers market, where they were just blended with water, so that all the goodness is in there… they were delicious! I’m a bit stuck in my milky ways I think!
Lilybett - Gah – I need to live somewhere less suburban and more urban. None of the grocers or supermarkets carry kale. Even the nearby farmers’ markets don’t have it. Need to drive into the city before we hit kale town – which is both a pain and probably a little counter productive.
Yelle - I love your suggestion of keeping the kale in the freezer! Lately we’ve been juicing all of our fruits and veggies so that we can get some kale in our diet. I will definitely have to give our juicer a break and bring out our blender to try making a smoothie with frozen kale and kiwis – sounds like a delicious combo!
Sash - It is delicious Yelle. I haven’t done any juicing, ever… maybe I should start? 🙂
